Stirring swinging live jazz Doug MacDonald – LIVE IN HAWAII: I’ve been reviewing jazz guitarist Doug’s great albums for many years now, most recently his “Toluca Lake Jazz” set, earlier this year. To get an up-close and personal look & listen, be sure to watch this performance from an earlier album…
There’s lots more for you enjoy when you SUBSCRIBE to Doug’s YouTube channel, too.
On the new live outing, Doug’s fantastic guitar is joined by Noel Okimoto’s vibraphone, bass from Dean Taba and Darryl Pellegrini’s drums… on songs like Doug’s original “Bossa Don“, you’ll “get your groove”, no doubt… I could almost feel the gentle breezes of the islands as I listened to this (with my headphones on, of course)… DJ’s are going to love it, too!
The group’s down & funky rendition of Oscar Pettiford’s “Blues In The Closet” clocks in at a fantastic 9:19, so each player gets the chance to tell your their story… flawless recording makes the listening experience a lot of fun, too. You’ll be finger-poppin’ & toe-tappin’ all day long.
The swinging really commences on Lester Young’s “Lester Leaps In“… the band absolutely COOKS on this gem… this song absolutely makes the album purchase worth it!
Doug’s “Cat City Samba” was, without question, my personal favorite of the seven (long) performances… I particularly loved Noel’s vibraphone on this piece, and have no doubt you’ll fall in love with it instantly.
I give Doug and all his players a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) score of 4.99… a totally timeless album. Get more information on Doug’s website. Rotcod Zzaj
