Very fine jazz quartet debut Califournia Quartet – Califournia Quartet

Very fine jazz quartet debut Califournia Quartet – CALIFOURNIA QUARTET:  I reviewed the guitarist for this quartet, Doug MacDonald, on his “Organisms” release earlier this year, where he got very high marks indeed.

The group hasn’t published any “live” videos yet, but you can SUBSCRIBE to their topic channel to hear all the songs on the album…. it would be nice to see/hear video of their performances in live mode – ah, well, maybe for the next album, aye?

On this very fine jazz quartet debut release, Doug’s fantastic jazz guitar is joined by Kim Richmond on Alto Sax/Flute, Harvey Newmark on Bass, and Paul Kreibich on drums… it’s clear that they’re in their comfort zone together, especially on upbeat tunes like the 6:22 “San Raphael“… the recording quality is flawless – you’ll hear new “things” each & every time you listen to this song.

Doug’s extended guitar intro on the 6:28 “Tenderly” soon leads to some of the “throatiest” reed work I’ve heard (yet) in 2019… I can guarantee that DJ’s across the globe will be spinning this track over & over again… be SURE to listen to this tune (as well as the rest) with your headphones on, to get the full jazz effect!

Since I really love “funky” & “jaunty” when it comes to my jazz listening, it was very easy to pick “E Spot” as my personal favorite of the ten well-crafted tunes offered up for your jazz listening enjoyment…

I give this exciting new jazz quartet a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) score of 4.99.  Get more information on Doug’s website.        Rotcod Zzaj
