Sensitive soulful Neil Young tribute Kelley Suttenfield – When We Were Young

Sensitive soulful Neil Young tribute Kelley Suttenfield – WHEN WE WERE YOUNG:  My last review of Kelley’s splendid vocal works was way back in issue #148, where she got good marks, to be sure… I didn’t see any live video there from this new release (hint! hint!), but you’ll still want to SUBSCRIBE to Kelley’s YouTube channel, where you’ll find other videos to enjoy.

What’s always made Kelley’s vocals stand out for me is her ability to wrap the listener (quite intimately) in tastefully and with great skill… you’ll agree when you hear her sing “Only Love Can Break Your Heart“; her pacing is immaculate, and the players “get” what her interpretation of Neil’s beautiful song… I can definitely see this one getting some MAJOR airplay, too!

One of my favorite songs from Neil Young (due in part to personal experiences with that damage) is “The Needle and the Damage Done“… Kelley’s rendition will make you understand just how devastating and painful that spike can be… one of the most unique performances of this song I’ve heard.

There was no question in my mind after the first spin of the album that “Down by the River” is my choice for personal favorite of the eleven songs offered up… artfully crafted, and the players (Matthew Fries (piano, Fender Rhodes); Tosh Sheridan (electric & acoustic guitars); Phil Palombi (double bass); Eric Halvorson (drums, percussion); and Tom Valdez (cello) on select tracks) make the song come ALIVE… this one will spin over & over again on my player, folks!

I give Kelley and her excellent musical talents a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) score of 4.99 for this fine vocal adventure.  Get more information on Kelley’s website.             Rotcod Zzaj
