Refreshing original jazz performances Sam Bevan – Emergence

Refreshing original jazz performances Sam Bevan – EMERGENCE:  Bassist Sam Bevan gives you nine of the most refreshing original jazz performances you’ll hear in 2018, without question… just listen to the high-energy output on “Sleepless in Suresnes“, and you’ll be an “instant believer”, I’ve no doubt… though it only clocks in at 3:28, it’s full of exciting changes and tasty turns that both seasoned jazz vets and novices can dig down deep on.

If it’s mellow boppin’ your ears are yearning for, you’ll find “Blues for CM” will last the test of time… after a low-key intro, right at the :51 second mark, the whole crew jumps in with both feet & will make you bop till you drop… this is one of the swinging-est tunes I’ve reviewed (yet) in 2018… freedom reigns on this performance!

What really stands out in Sam’s arrangements and compositions is how inventive they are… every note sounds fresh, and the rhythms are palpable… you will feel them, no matter if you’re in your living room, or motoring on down the highway… if you don’t want to take my word for it, just listen to the changes and grooves on my personal favorite of the nine songs Sam offers up for your jazz edification – “Parallel Falcon“… the change that most impressed me happens at the 2:00 minute mark… from the high-spirited intro, the whole bands “pulls back” into an exploratory conversational mode that’s most enchanting, then take back off again at around 3:53 into territory you’ve never heard before.  This song is an “automatic” for my iPhone player, in a permanent slot.

I give Sam and his players a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.98 for this excellent jazz adventure.  Get more information on Sam’s Bandcamp page for the release.           Rotcod Zzaj
