One O’Clock Lab Band marvelous collection of Neil Slater jazz One O’Clock Lab Band – Legacy

One O’Clock Lab Band marvelous collection of Neil Slater jazz One O’Clock Lab Band – LEGACY:  I would imagine that Neil is in a state of pure ecstasy right about now… this gigantic 4-CD collection pays tribute to his decades of jazz work at UNT, and does it so well, you won’t be able to pull yourself away, especially on songs like the 6:59 “Keystone“… I’m not generally a fan of “boxed-set” albums, because they tend to get “bogged down” with pieces that sound very similar, but it’s clear that each & every song is a fresh experience… this song exemplifies that spirit!

In order for you to get a full preview of what the album is all about, I invite you to watch the excellent YouTube trailer that was put together for the release…

What they actually did with this video is excerpted much of the 168-page booklet that came with my review copy of the 4-CD set, which is a really nice touch… the music presented covers Neil’s compositions & arrangements all the way from the 1980’s through the 2000’s, with the last being titled “A New Era”… on that disc, you’ll find some of my favorite jazz listens (yet) from 2017… the opener on that disc, “Another Other“, is about as “modern” as you can get, but it’s fully accessible and vibrantly full of life!

With a total of thirty-eight great pieces, you may find something else that’s your favorite, but there was no doubt for me… the 7:21 “Time Sensitive” got my pick for personal favorite, blending great orchestral works superb and touching jazz elements that transcend time!

I give this one a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of a (perfect) 5.00 – meaning it also gets my “PICK” for “best boxed-set jazz collection”.  Get more information at the CD Baby page for the album.     Rotcod Zzaj
