Hot swing guitar review: Doug Munro and La Pompe Attack – The Harry Warren Songbook

Hot swing guitar Doug Munro and La Pompe Attack – THE HARRY WARREN SONGBOOK:  Doug’s sprightly jazz guitar energy is always welcome here; I’ve reviewed him several times (most recently in issue # 80), and this new album is a most pleasant addition to my collection, particularly on tracks like the high-energy “Chattanooga Choo Choo“, one of my all-time favorites, and Doug’s arrangements really bring the tune to life in a new light!

You can read a listing of each song and all the session players on the CD Baby page for the release… the totally upbeat “Blues For Harry” is one of the most lively songs I’ve listened to (yet) in 2017 & you’ll find yourself setting this one to “repeat” so you can hear it over & over again… tasty music in honor of Harry Warren (Doug’s great Uncle, by the way), the first major American composer to write music for films.

There’s no doubt you’ll be reminded of Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grapelli, as the songs are from that whole “hot swing” era… Doug said it took nearly 3 years from conception to recording & filming, but his efforts are well worth it, as you’ll hear on my personal favorite of the sixteen songs offered up, the closer, “At Last“… at nearly 7 minutes, this piece allows plenty of room for development, and gives me many pleasant memories – ultra-cool, to be sure.  I give Doug & his cohorts a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.97 for this energetic and satisfying music.  Get more information about this very accomplished player on Doug’s bio page.       Rotcod Zzaj
