Billy Lester Trio fresh original piano jazz Billy Lester Trio – Italy 2016

Billy Lester Trio fresh original piano jazz Billy Lester Trio – ITALY 2016:  I’ve reviewed Billy’s jazz piano work many times before, most recently on his “Unabridged” album, in issue # 165, where he got (as always) high marks from me.  This new release featured his unique jazz piano skills, with two amigos from the European jazz scene – Marcello Testa on bass and Nicola Stranieri doing drums – the music they create based on Billy’s original compositions is bright and vibrantly alive with the spirit of live jazz… listen to the 9:26 “Yeah, Man!” to hear how well they listen to each other… & of course, the tune is long enough for each player to stretch out, using the voice of their instrument to speak with (& to) you… one of the perkiest new jazz tunes you’ll hear this year.  The album release is slated for 3 November, 2017, but (fortunately) they’ve posted the samples already.

Billy’s unique approach & touch on jazz piano is perfectly illustrated on the tasty “Consolidation“… Marcello’s bass “walks” you along through Billy’s joy-filled notes, and Nicola’s drums provide fine counterpoint all the way through this high-energy track.

Of the six (long) songs offered up for your aural enjoyment on this outing, it is (without question) the beautiful & bluesy “To Giulia” that won my vote for personal favorite… lush playing and perfect pacing come together through the talents of each member of the trio to make this a tune that will play often on my iPhone car player.   I give Billy and his compadres a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this very collectible recording.  Get more information about Billy at the Billy Lester website.          Rotcod Zzaj
