Deuter’s Latest Album Mångata Melds Beauty, Calm, and Reflection
A collection of nine songs, inspired by the natural world, bringing a pleasing sense of inner peace and healing, while slowing down the madness of this world. Mångata explores the connection between the Earth and the Moon’s reflected light on water. Mångata refers to the Swedish word for the “moon path,” which describes the moon’s light on water, like a path on the surface of a river. The music’s feeling blends ambient, world, and new age music into something refreshingly new, and brings a naturally grounded and uplifting sensibility, while the title track has elements of pop in the mid section.
Opening very delicately, “Mångata” (1:55). The electronics emerge, a piano is climbing the elegant stairs with a choir and an orchestra. The whole is knitted together with the piano, soon in a dialog with a flute followed by the orchestra electronique, a time machine like a groaning bass, repeating the refrain and building. Imagine old tales of the round table, whistle and flute together until the piano takes off with a rapid melody adding a xylophone and another flute. With the strum of a guitar, “Horizon Light” (6:39) brings cascading repeating melodic phrases, while subtly a synth string orchestra joins in. The feeling continues using a piano with electronics, “Écho de la Lune” (7:27). I swear I hear a choir in a distant cave, tonight here on the lake I find an echo of the Moon Sound with Pearls, something new sparkles, a simple group of tones lights up the sky.
“Mondklang mit Perlen” (9:02) is like cold clear air, a whistle calls lonely and sad, more frosty mountain vistas, evoked by flutes and sweeps and then new instruments come in, the altitude increases with a bowed bass and flute, a harp and xylophone with another new flute, the air force sweeps overhead, while winding weaving bells with guitar picking groaning bass singing woman ethereal piano and xylophone flute and whistle violin or viola more than one stuff in the sky piano cello and ethereal woman voice together and a xylophone takes us home. Beginning again as a cosmic blend of electronics, “Northern Lights” (12:33) launches us in a new direction when a piano steps in as a celestial topping, this adds a choral swirl, with a flute, a piano and a groaning bass. Is the Aurora Borealis where we can go tonight?

I remember that the mountain girl loves her birds. She comes from the highlands, “Fjallastelpa” (7:06) and this track features a piper duet leading into sparkling strings and the electronics join in with a morning call and response as the sun rises. I am feeling a little sad while also quietly triumphant, like a sunrise. Ringing high notes always clear and bright, “Moonlight Rêverie” (5:49) climbs the peaks the electronics build into a complex blend of crystal rainbows, cello and electronics, forming a celestial melody bending at times into an imaginary celestial electronic orchestra, remembering the old story, and the weeping strings, “Resonance of Silence” (5:08), and is followed by “Sunset Gratitude” (4:47) which brings an organ and choir overtones, concluding our journey along a wavy road-like shape that appears across the water when the moon is shining on it.
This moon’s reflection in the water is an expression of beauty that is calm and restful, the feeling can be reflective and inspirational, as well as uplifting. Everywhere, the feeling of healing is quietly powerful. The soothing sound of Mångata is full of patterns for finding the purpose of the mind and the construction of the universe. Mångata feels like an orchestra, very heart-driven, melodic, and expresses a deep connection with the natural world. I can easily hear in this music perhaps a thousand amazing musicians, but it is only our friend, Deuter.
