* thelarrynewcombquartet legendary jazz guitar * The Larry Newcomb Quartet Featuring Bucky Pizzarelli – LIVING TRIBUTE:  As one of Larry’s jazz guitar pals (Gene Bertoncini, reviewed in issue # 183 of Improvijazzation Nation magazine) says, “Larry’s melodic lines are strong and on the money!”… you won’t have any quibble with that assessment when you listen to one of the funkiest guitar-led tracks I’ve heard (yet) in 2017, “Gold Top” (it’s only 3:20, but it kookz)!

The album is a tribute to players who have had an impact on his own playing, so there are a variety of styles… just listen to the tasty opener, “I Remember You“, to hear how wonderful Larry and his group sound (Bucky Pizzarelli, acoustic archtop guitar, Leigh Jonaitis, vocals, Eric Olsen, piano, Dmitri Kolesnik, bass, Jimmy Madision, drums) on the jazz classics.  The key word for all these tunes, in Larry’s capable hands, is “intimate”!

I found the soulful (even “gospel-like”, I’d say)Crossing Overto be very aurally attractive, and dance-able… I have no doubt you’ll be up & dancin’ ’round the living room when you hear this one.  From a jazz guitar perspective, though, it was easy to pickAlone Togetheras my personal favorite of the eleven fine songs offered up for your jazz listening pleasure.  I give Larry and his fellow players a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.98 for this beautiful set.  Get more information at Larry’s website (& be sure to go see him if he’s playing near you).           Rotcod Zzaj
