jazz masters legacy emmetcohen Emmet Cohen – Masters Legacy Series Volume I

jazz masters legacy emmetcohen Emmet Cohen – MASTERS LEGACY SERIES VOLUME I:  Folks, it just doesn’t get any better than this, from a jazz perspective, anyway!  Emmet is a master jazz pianist in his own right, and with Jimmy Cobb adding powerful swing beats, Yasushi Nakamura on acoustic bass and Godwin Lewis doing also sax (tracks 5 & 10), your ears are in for a treat.  You’ll believe me right away as you listen to the beautiful and moody “Mr. Robinson“… the tune clocks in at 8:16, so there’s room for each player to express themselves clearly after Emmet’s wonderful piano introduction on this original tune by him!

I didn’t know it before, but Jimmy helped Miles Davis form his sound, and that kind of skill isn’t something that “just any drummer” achieves… just listen to his superb drumming on the closer, “Concerto For Cobb“, another Cohen original… not only will you be a believer, you’ll find your ears have a natural attraction the the vibrant energy, and keep coming back to hear the tune over and over again!  The recording is flawless, and needs no enhancement to put it right at the top of that “masters” stack.

Of the nine songs offered up, though, it is the “almost-in-church” feel of “Hard Times” that I easily chose as my personal favorite… this is helped (no doubt) by Godwin’s soul-filled sax work… the tune just SMOKES, folks!  I give Emmet and his group a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this splendid performance… and I’m surely looking forward to Volume II.  Get more information on Emmet’s page for the album.           Rotcod Zzaj
