Idiot Grins Oakland super soulful music Idiot Grins – State of Health

Idiot Grins Oakland super soulful music Idiot Grins – STATE OF HEALTH:  Just a heckkuva krew from Oakland… Michael Conner: organ, piano, clavinet, harmonica, synths; Evan Eustis: bass, background vocals, mandolins, lead vocal; John Hansen: lead vocals, background vocals, electric piano, accordion; Michael Melgoza: drums, background vocals Randy Strauss: guitar, lap steel; Featuring: The Byrd Sisters (Lauren Byrd, Lena Byrd & Lisa Byrd): background vocals Johnnie Bamont: saxaphone; Jeff Cressman: trombone; Marvin McFadden; trumpet; Rene Jenkins: trombone on Dream; Joe Goldmark: pedal steel and David Frazier: percussion… this is their third album, and I fell in love with it immediately!  They have a whole bunch of tunes on their YouTube channel, so you’ll want to visit there & sign up (hint – it would have been really, REALLY nice to have a couple of live videos from this album posted over there – ah, well, maybe on the next release).

I’ll tell you right now, they had me hooked right from the opener, the 4:02 “Get Busy Dying“… super soul, & the Byrd Sisters vocals took me all the way back to the late ’60’s & early ’70’s… think “Tower of Power”, & you’ll HAVE it!

The driving rhythms on “Build It” will have you up on yer’ hoofs in only a matter of seconds, people… superb guitar lead lines & ultra-funky beats will have you hip-shakin’ with th’ best of th’ folks on the floor.

Speakin’ of funky – you’re gonna’ be up & dancin’ ’round the room like you were back in MoTown as you listen to “That’s Some Funky Business“… again, the Byrd sisters will rock you right on back to the early years of soul… I totally dug this tune!

It wasn’t hard to pick my personal favorite of the dozen soul-filled songs… the 4:01 “Frock” projects the ultimate message of R&B & soul… POWER… in fact, this is the best soul tune I’ve heard (yet) in 2018.

I give Idiot Grins a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99.  Get more information on the Idiot Grins website.         Rotcod Zzaj
