* tobecontinued unusual translucent sound * To Be Continued – POETRY FROM THE FUTURE: I’m sure I won’t be the only one to proclaim that this music is NOT for your “average” jazz listener… the quartet (Carol Liebowitz (piano); Claire de Brunner (bassoon); Daniel Carter (alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones, flute, trumpet, clarinet) and Kevin Norton (vibraphone, percussion)) has no restrictive musical boundaries as they improvise their way into the future, as you’ll hear (most poignantly) on the excellent “Sonic Mirage“… very, VERY impressive work that’s paced in such a way as not to be inaccessible – even some staid old jazzers will find this entertaining.
The high-energy on “Ringing Circles” will have your head running in – well, circles, lol. The tune dives right into improvisational turf from the very first note, and evolves just about like you’d think it would from the title… sound enveloping sound, then leading right into the next whirl & swirl… I found this one very aurally attractive, but I expect it would be even more dashing if you were watching these performers live (in fact, this reminds me in some ways of similar acts I used to perform on with my friends in TransMuseq). I totally enjoyed this song.
The most emotional song for me is also my pick for favorite of the ten offered up, “Beautiful Outcast”… the piano seems to be more at the forefront on this piece, and that’s probably why I enjoyed it so much. I give these folks a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for listeners who want to explore sounds that are not “the same” all the time; “EQ” (energy quotient) rating is 4.98.
