Todd Mosby Channels Precision and Place on American Heartland Ahead of April 3 Release

Independent composer, guitarist, and instrument innovator Todd Mosby continues to refine a distinctly American fusion language with American Heartland, arriving April 3. Rooted in Missouri yet globally informed, Mosby’s work bridges technical sophistication and emotional clarity—an increasingly rare balance in the contemporary instrumental space.

Drawing from a deep well that includes Traditional Jazz, North Indian Classical, Folk Rock, Bluegrass, and Impressionist influences reminiscent of Debussy, Mosby constructs compositions that reward both close listening and immediate immersion. His signature Imrat guitar, a hybrid instrument of his own design, further expands his tonal vocabulary, allowing for intricate phrasing and layered harmonic textures that define his evolving sound.

Ahead of the album’s release, three singles—“Palomino,” “Land of Green,” and the title track “American Heartland”—offer a compelling preview of Mosby’s artistic direction and the scale of collaboration behind the project.

“Palomino,” released February 20, stands as a centerpiece of the upcoming record. Driven by a rhythmic sensibility that nods to the asymmetralbum cover of man in green shirt holding guitarical elegance of Dave Brubeck while channeling the harmonic warmth of Antônio Carlos Jobim, the track features an elite ensemble. The arrangement is both kinetic and controlled, unfolding with cinematic pacing as electric guitar lines weave through dynamic percussion and richly voiced harmonies. Inspired by Mosby’s childhood experiences riding and sketching horses.

“I have a lot of roots in where I grew up,” says Mosby, “It’s really isolated, but it’s also very rich in musical history and culture. You can absorb it all and still have the freedom to develop your own voice.”

In contrast, “Land of Green” distills that same musicianship into a more immediate, groove, with tightly arranged brass and rhythmic interplay. Arranged by Tom Scott, the track evokes pastoral optimism and a sense of the open prairies. Each player moves with clarity and purpose, reinforcing Mosby’s strength not only as a composer but as a bandleader capable of shaping cohesive, high-level ensemble performances.

The title track, “American Heartland,” anchors the project thematically. Opening with a measured, deliberate pulse, the piece gradually expands into a full-band arrangement that highlights Mosby’s electric guitar as both a melodic and textural centerpiece; he played three guitars for this album. The composition reflects a duality—grounded yet expansive—capturing both the stillness and vitality of the Midwest landscape it honors.

Produced in collaboration with multi-GRAMMY®️-winning figures, including returning producer Jeff Weber, American Heartland represents a significant independent effort that underscores Mosby’s commitment to craftsmanship, artistry and collaboration. Joining them on the album are drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, saxophonist Tom Scott, percussionist Luis Conte, and bassists Michael Manring and Leland Sklar  instrumentalist Dapo Torimiro, and vocalists Laura Vall and Lola Kristine, and that’s just to name a few!

The production of American Heartland reflects a thoughtful collaboration across some of the industry’s most respected studios and engineers. Recording and mixing were led by Clark Germain, with the album mixed at WonderWorld Studio in Hollywood, California, and additional support from assistant engineer Nicole Schmidt of Village Studios. Additional recording sessions took place at Shock City Studios in St. Louis, Missouri, engineered by Sam Swaine, while select solo acoustic guitar tracks were mixed by Tom Eaton at Sounds & Substance in East Kingston, New Hampshire.

The project was mastered by renowned engineer Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Los Angeles, ensuring a polished and dynamic final sound. Visual elements were equally considered, with photography by Andrew Matusik and art direction and design by Allie Oliver-Barnes, completing a production that is as cohesive visually as it is sonically.

With three singles now available, listeners are offered preview into a project defined by precision playing, thoughtful composition, and a clear love for the heartland. If these initial releases are any indication, American Heartland positions Todd Mosby as a composer and artist worth exploring more deeply. Visit Todd Mosby for more music.
