Timeless innovation rippling emotion Darrell Katz And The JCA Orchestra – Rats Live On No Evil Star

Timeless innovation rippling emotion Darrell Katz And The JCA Orchestra – RATS LIVE ON NO EVIL STAR:  It’s been a while since I reviewed Darrell’s excellent work with the JCA Orchestra in issue # 155, but I was so impressed with the dynamics on that album that I fully expected this new release to be a total treat… and I wasn’t (in the least) disappointed… though the performance of the title track below is from 2014, it still shows how intricately connected the players are in the Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra…

…there are a ton of newer recordings on the JCA YouTube channel, and you’ll want to SUBSCRIBE to it since you’re there already.

The album just went HOT on October 12th, 2018; trust me… if you love composers like Frank Zappa, you’ll find the twists and turns on “To An Angel” to be perfect for (even) the most jaded jazzers among you… it has more “punch”, but I’m still reminded of of FZ’s music on “Live At The Roxy” as I listen to this… SOLID through & through!

All but one of the eight (long) tunes offered up is seven minutes or longer, so be prepared (with your headphones on) for a full hour of music that will thrill and excite your innermost senses… that’s especially true on songs like the 10:38 “Three Or Four Kinds Of Blues”… as it starts, you’ll be feeling like the orchestra is prepping you for a pretty “standard” blues set… but, at right about the 1:30 mark, things get “different” than your ears were expecting… this is (without question) my personal favorite on the album… all different directions at once, but executed flawlessly!

I give Darrell and all his players in the JCA Orchestra a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99.  Get more information on Darrel’s website.         Rotcod Zzaj
