- Alexa Tarantino – The Roar And The Whisper (Blue Engine Records) – Released

Alexa Tarantino on January 19, 2026, this project showcases composer Alexa Tarantino’s mastery across saxophones and flutes. The ensemble features a powerhouse rhythm section including Steven Feifke, Philip Norris, and Mark Whitfield, Jr. Adding a layer of world-class vocal texture is Cécile McLorin Salvant, while Keita Ogawa provides intricate percussion that bridges the gap between contemporary jazz and world fusion rhythms.
- Tomas Fujiwara – Dream Up
Drummer Tomas Fujiwara explores exotic textures by pairing percussionists with instrumentalists like Kaoru Watanabe. The tracks act as musical pastiches, utilizing deep grooves and “scurrying palpitations” to create a unique world-fusion landscape. Nice to know this project was made possible in part by a commission from Roulette Intermedium, with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, and by the Robert D. Bielecki Foundation. There’s hope for the arts yet!

Elipsis is out now! Pedrito Martinez, Antonio Sanchez, and Michael League – Elipsis
Still gaining traction is Elipsis, just released by the energetic trio of world-renowned percussionist Pedrito Martinez, drummer Antonio Sanchez (of PatMetheny fame), and Michael League (of Snarky Puppy). It’s been called “a masterclass in world fusion” promising jazz-rock arrangements and electronic layers, and made me feel the way I did when I first heard The Buena Vista Social Club in the ’90s…and then some. References to Latin, Catalonian and Yoruban flavors and a unifying message beg for a closer listen. - Wanees Zarour – Silwan
Palestinian musician Wanees Zarour brings the sounds of the Levant to modern jazz in this evocative release. Utilizing traditional Middle Eastern stringed instruments like the oud and buzuq, Zarour collaborates with an ensemble (including Bryan Pardo and Catie Hickey) to add fresh, global flavors to contemporary improvisational structures. Slated for February 13, 2026, but catch this video preview. - In Northern California, Gary Muszynski presents an evening of live music from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Spain, Ireland, Venezuela and parts unknown (Planet Handpan), along with Venezuelan guitarist Carlos Caminos and special musical guest, vocalist Bryan Dyer (Bobby McFarrin, Motion). With plenty of space to move, the global music medicine begins at 8 pm, January 31, 2026 at Home Yoga Studio, 135 Tunstead Ave., San Anselmo, CA. Get tickets!
