Superbly funky jazz guitar – Greg Skaff – Soulmation

Superbly funky jazz guitar – Greg Skaff – SOULMATION:  I first started reviewing Greg’s down & funky jazz guitar work way back in issue # 87, and every album since seems to have gotten nearer the pinnacle of funk mountain!  On his latest scorcher, he achieves that lofty goal easily and (seemingly) without effort… just listen to the rockin’ beats on “Mother Root” & you’ll know (in the immediate, volkz) why I love this cat’s playing (Jimi clearly comes to mind – as in Hendrix, that is, of course)… this tunes just SMOKES, people!  The players he has with him on this fantastic release are – organist Pat Bianchi and drummer Charley Drayton, and then another trio grouping – electric bassist Fima Ephron and drummer Jonathan Barber, and both sets of players “know” what Greg wants – intuitively, I’d say!

The funkified opener, “Conjure“, includes some EXCELLENT jazz organ, and the backbeat will have your tail up & steppin’ ’round the floor with all due haste… Greg’s guitar leads are just dripping with the soul sauce needed for this composition!  I can tell you right now, this is (without question) the best guitar-led song I’ve listened to (yet) in 2017!

Some “jazz purists” may find this too “revolutionary” for their tastes… may they all be smattered with scunion, lol… if you can’t get down with my personal favorite of the dozen songs offered up, the 4:01 “Fleurette Africaine“, with it’s superbly performed percussion and mighty mellow guitar lines from Greg, you probably belong in a morgue somewhere (just kidding).  I give Greg and his high-energy, high-talent trios a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99.  Get more information and news at Greg’s website.         Rotcod Zzaj (author’s note:  IF you decide to purchase this, please use the AMAZON link below to help with our Amazon Associates membership – thanks)
