Soulful jazz vocal adventures Cathy Segal-Garcia – Straight Ahead To The U.K

Soulful jazz vocal adventures Cathy Segal-Garcia – STRAIGHT AHEAD TO THE U.K.:  Each and every project that Cathy performs on (this is her 13th project, so I’ve reviewed her work in many contexts) is “different”… though the video below isn’t a part of this album release, I’m including it because it shows her delightful high energy performance skills…

…you will find MANY other rewarding jazz vocal styles represented, too, when you SUBSCRIBE to Cathy’s YouTube channel… I did.

When “hip” is your listening criteria, you’ll find Cathy’s performance on “Shake It Down” absolutely enjoyable… it’s a dimension of her vocal skills I’ve never heard before – & I just LOVE IT!

Cathy’s treatment of Mancini’s “Dreamsville” brings out the lovely in vocal jazz, and will have you toe-tappin’ and finger-snappin’ just like Maynard Krebs, lol… I was especially intrigued by the keyboard work from Isamu McGregor on this tune.  The player list is as follows,

England

CLIFF HALL piano (2, 3, 9); JOHN PEARCE piano (7, 8, 12); ROY HILTON piano (5); ANDY MACINTOSH sax; SIMON GARDNER trumpet; PAUL MORGAN acoustic bass (4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11); LAURENCE COTTLE electric bass (2, 3, 12); IAN THOMAS drums; Special Guest Vocalist NORMA WINSTONE

US

ISAMU McGREGOR piano (4), Rhodes CAREY FRANK B3 (1, 6, 4, 8, 11) JOHN LEFTWICH bass, synth pads (3, 5, 7, 9, 12) BILI REDD & IRENE CATHAWAY background vocals (4).

Since I’m a keyboardist myself, it was easy to fall in love with Carey’s B3 work on “Gypsy In My Soul“… in fact, after my third round of listening to the album, I declare this as my personal favorite of the thirteen rockin’ jazz vocal performances offered up!

I give Cathy and her players a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) score of 4.98.  Get more information on Cathy’s website.           Rotcod Zzaj
