Shawn Maxwell’s New Tomorrow inspired, refreshing jazz collaborations Shawn Maxwell’s New Tomorrow – Music In My Mind

Shawn Maxwell’s New Tomorrow inspired, refreshing jazz collaborations Shawn Maxwell’s New Tomorrow – MUSIC IN MY MIND:  Though I’ve listened to Shawn’s fine inspired jazz collaborations before, this is the first time I’ve reviewed his work…on this highly exciting release, Shawn plays alto saxophone/clarinet/flute, and is joined by a stellar cast of players, to include Dee Alexander – voice, Victor Garcia – trumpet/flugelhorn, Chad McCullough – trumpet/flugelhorn, Corey Wilkes – trumpet, Matt Nelson – piano/Rhodes, Patrick Mulcahy – electric bass, Junius Paul – electric & acoustic bass, Tim Seisser – electric bass, Phil Beale – drums, Stephen Lynerd – vibraphone, Kalyan Pathak – Duff drums, Paiste Cup Chimes, and Djembe, Percussion.  If you’re looking for full-bodied and full-tilt jazz, you’re going to fall in love with the “jump” feel of “Maxwell’s House” (the album doesn’t go live until 21 May, so I’ll come back & add the sample links in when I’m told they’re HOT)…

Though the video below doesn’t include all of the “New Tomorrow” players, it does show Shawn’s superb sax at work…

…I’d strongly suggest that you SUBSCRIBE to Shawn’s YouTube channel, so you can see all the splendid live action he has posted up there.

The bass intro on the title track, “Music In My Mind”, meshes perfectly with Dee’s vocal and other instruments… and, of course, all these tunes are original compositions, which adds to my appreciation for them… I’ve been a firm believer for a long time now that when jazz is performed by the author, you get/hear a lot more of the soul behind the tune, and the fresh sound you’ll hear on this 6:37 song verifies that I’m correct on that.

If jazz horn is what turns your jazz krank, you’re going to fall in love with Chad’s playing on “Herding Happiness”… it’s a strange effect they create, especially when Stephen’s vibraphone kicks in at around the 2:10 mark… very, very interesting.

Since I’m a H-U-G-E fan of jazz that has elements of FUNK, my personal favorite of the ten fine tunes offered up for your jazz pleasure is “Glamasue” – one of the “groov’in’st” tunes I’ve heard (yet) in 2018… in fact, this one merits an award!

I give Shawn & his high-talent crew a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this great album.  Keep your eyes (& ears) on Shawn’s website, so you’ll know when this is ready for release.      Rotcod Zzaj
