* soulful Brazilian jazz vocal * Mari Nobre – LIVE AND ALIVE:  There’s really only one word that totally describes Mari’s performances on this excellent April, 2017 jazz release – LIVELY, of course!  As you listen to her soulful singing on the opener, “Chega de Saudade” (No More Longing, according to the translator), her captivating style and vocal skills will be immediately apparent – after the first 8 bars, she will have you as wrapped up as I was, I’ve no doubt… the fact that it’s recorded in front of a live audience only adds to the vibrancy!

There’s an added nuance as well… in 2016, she was diagnosed with cancer, and as she says “music healed me when I was diagnosed”… all you need to do is spin her beautiful and very unique interpretation of Antônio Carlos Jobim’s “Corcovado“, and your own healing process will begin… I say this, of course, as both a believer in the power of music and a cancer survivor myself… this is a truly impressive performance, folks.

Of the nine tunes offered up for your jazz listening pleasure, it is the masterful arrangements and superb integration of Mari’s vocal with the high-talent players on “Dance Me To The End Of Love“, and arranged by Leo Nobre, that easily won my vote for personal favorite… the players, by the way, include her husband, Leo Nobre (bass), sax and flute from Justo Almario, drums by Angelo Metz/Sandro Feliciano and piano from Daniel Szabo.  I give Mari and her crew a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, and an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.98 for this fine album.  Get more information on Mari’s website.     Rotcod Zzaj

  1. Thank you Dick Metcalf for this wonderful review! I am very happy to know that our music could touch you and your readers. Music can heal us and connect us spiritually, and it did it again through this album. Leo Nobre is the arranger of “Dance Me to the End of Love” and with your kind words you put a smile on his face, right on time for Father’s Day! I would love to see you and your audience at one of our live concerts, nothing better than creating a musical moment with the rest of humanity. Axe’, Mari Nobre

    • Mari – I truly appreciate your comment… if you’re ever up in Seattle or Portland Oregon, please let me know in advance… I’d love to come and do a live show review if you can give me a press pass. I just noticed that I forgot the link for the tune Leo arranged, so I’m correcting that! Please don’t hesitate to spread the word to your fans… if they read this review, I would LOVE to hear their comments, too (each one personally responded to, of course). Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for the lovely music!
