Masako shimmering piano solo beauty Masako – PIANO SANCTUARY: The word that immediately comes to mind as I listen to the splendid opener on this new dozen-song solo piano album from Masako is “shimmering”… which means “shine with a tremulous light“… the 4:21 “When You Were Little” brings back instant memories for me of the wonders of my own childhood (in the same Northeast regions where she realized these wonderful tunes), with both the shining glory and the (sometimes) trembling notes of sadness… a simple, but very effective song!
I’ve reviewed Masako’s work many times before, most recently in issue # 141; her growth as an artist over the three albums she has put together at Will Ackerman’s studios is abundantly evident on this new release… in fact, Will says she is “one of the most exciting and talented pianists in Contemporary Instrumental and New Age music”… as you listen to her full-bodied playing on “Midnight Sun“, you will know exactly why Will says that… deep, strong chords with grand overtones that will transport you (easily) to the sanctuary (a place of refuge or safety) her album title speaks of… I can tell you right now, this wonderful composition will be playing (over & over again) on my car player… total calm is achieved.
Masako’s own musical (and listening) background is very diverse, and she doesn’t “pigeonhole” herself into any one genre… as you listen to her unique “touch” on “Frozen Quarry“, you will hear strains of some of those influences in this marvelous piano creation… I just LOVED the rich chords she uses to paint her story on this piece – and I know you will too.
Masako has won several awards from Zone Music Reporter, and her marvelous message on “The Land We Called Hope“, my personal favorite of the dozen she has offered up for your listening pleasure, is a piece that I believe will be a winner this year… now, more than ever, we need the kind of healing imagery that Masako provides through her keyboards… I give her a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99.
