Fred Farell Sings the Music of Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach mighty mellow jazz vocal works Fred Farell Sings the Music of Dave Liebman  and Richie Beirach  – DISTANT SONG:  Fred “pulled out all the stops”, so to speak, when he had Dave (soprano/tenor sax and wooden recorder) and Richie (acoustic piano) play their tunes for his superb jazz vocal works… as you listen to him on the 7:34 “Leaving“, you will know why I’m so impressed… Fred’s vocal doesn’t kick in until the 2:40 mark, after a wonderfully refreshing piano interlude from Richie, but when the full trio spins in behind Fred, it’s pure magic.

Fred has several songs from the album posted on his YouTube channel, so I recommend that you visit & subscribe there, too… it would have been really cool to see him perform one of these songs live – maybe on the next album, eh, Fred?

If you’re a world traveler like me, Fred’s vocals on Dave’s composition, “Places“, will bring back (both) sweet & sour memories that draw you in & under the spell these excellent players weave for you…

There’s also a deeply moving instrumental composed and performed by Dave, as a sort of “interlude” to the vocals, I guess.. “Forgotten Fantasies” digs down deep into emotional levels you may have forgotten were there – totally lovely!

Of the ten enchanting pieces offered up, it was easy to pick my personal favorite… “Mitsuku” is the longest piece on the album, and features Richie’s piano – which is only fitting, since he composed the tune – from the point that Dave joins in (around the 1:50 mark), the song takes on “different movements and tones”… & then, right around 4:18, Fred meshes the entire piece together with one of the strongest jazz vocal performances I’ve listened to (yet) in 2018.

I give Fred and his fellow masters a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 for this very collectible CD.  Get more information at the Whaling City Records site for the album.           Rotcod Zzaj
