elegant ballroom jazz Flying Horse Big Band – BIG MAN ON CAMPUS:  The tags for this one were easy, because I grew up in an era when “ballroom” jazz was playing on the TV every evening in millions of homes around the country, and the sax work you’ll hear Harry Allen doing on tunes like “June Song” will easily transport any of you who lived in that same era back to those oh-so-glorious days… the big difference between those all-night television session and this high-energy recording, though, is that the recording is flawless and brings each and every instrument (see the extensive player list here) into your ears clearly and with life abundant!  I’ve reviewed Harry’s work on many other albums… just go to our sister magazine, Improvijazzation Nation, and do a search for his name.

If you’re a big fan of Latin music, you’ll find the excellent percussion and red-hot arrangements on “Partido Blue” to be a favorite… it’s very easy to picture a dance hall with beautiful Latinas & their beaus moving together ’round the room like a gigantic dance contest!

For those readers who don’t know me well, you’ll find that it’s ALWAYS the original songs I’m most attracted to, and Jeff Rupert’s original on the title track, “BMOC“, easily is my pick for personal favorite of the dozen tunes offered up for your jazz enjoyment.  This is a rollicking jazz set that’s jam-packed with songs that will make your body (and your spirit) move in very pleasant ways.  I give the band, as well as Harry, a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.98 for this splendid release.  You can get more information at the Flying Horse Records website.  & be sure to tell them you read about the band here…         Rotcod Zzaj
