Cathy co-wrote “Mary O’Shaunessy” with her husband Gary Hoffman, and clearly shows why my theory that music an artist created is always performed with that “extra bit” of spirit & soul… a simple tune, but one you will remember for many moons to come. One of the things I believe I can hear in Cathy’s singing is an inability to settle for norms, and you’ll be a believer as well when you listen to her unique rendition of Jobim’s “Bonita”, with Venezuelan pianist Otmaro Ruiz; it will really touch your emotions deeply.
It was easy for me to choose my favorite… the opener for the 2-CD set, “I Love You“, gives you an insight to just how swingin’ Cathy can get as she performs the Cole Porter tune with Josh Nelson on piano… lovely & lively, to be sure! I give Cathy and her eleven pianists a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.98 for this fine adventure in jazz.
